About the Item

A hallmark of Qing-dynasty domestic architecture, tall lattice panels such as this were used in traditional courtyard homes to allow light and air into a room whilst maintaining privacy. With grand proportions and an elongated window, this lattice door panel is a beautiful example of the elevated craftsmanship found in Qing-dynasty architecture. Carefully assembled of alternating short and long pieces, the open lattice has a geometric design of quatrefoil medallions and stepped diamond patterns. The intricate lattice is finely worked with slender rods, close seams and smooth, rounded edges, set within a beveled frame with beaded detail. The outermost frames have a concave curvature and enclose decorative, inset panels of pierced dragon cutouts and abstract wood inlay. Deaccessioned from the MacLean Collection of Asian Art.
