About the Item

A beautiful six panel gilded Chinese screen (or room divider) that had brass details at the feet. The screen is painted both sides. The gilded side is elaborately decorated. It features birds in flight and resting in tree limbs and on plants. The flora includes a magnolia tree and what appears to be roses or chrysanthemums, bamboo, cherry blossoms and iris' on the lower half of the screen. On the left side there is an inscription which appears to translate to English as " Birds sing and flowers smell sweet". The background and frame are black lacquer. The rest of the screen is primarily gilded with birds and flowers in shades of blues, pinks, cream and some light yellow. The back of the screen is decorated but far less elaborately. It features birds and flowers on a black lacquer background. There are some imperfections; small chips to the black lacquer (see close up images) and light scratches on the screen also some patina to the brass feet. Generally it is very good condition given the age of the piece. It would be a lovely addition to any interior.
