Japanese Asian Six-Panel Folding Byobu Screen Landcape Bridge with Iris Flowers

About the Item

A gorgeous six-panel Japanese Byobu folding screen depicting a nature lake/landscape scene with a water walkway/angular bridge and blossoming iris flowers - perhaps an homage to the famed Irises screens by the famed Japanese artist Ogata Korin (Irises at Yatsuhashi (Eight Bridges) of the Rinpa school. The beautiful colors, gold leaf, and beautiful hand-painted detail of the blooming flowers make this an attractive and special work. Original decorative period brass hardware adds another wonderful touch. Late Edo (1603-1868) / Early Meiji period (1868-1912) period. Provenance: Property of Private Pacific Northwest Collection. The original price tag on verso (likely removable). This wonderful screen is sure to stand out in almost any setting whether used as a small divider or carefully hung on the wall as a work of art. A beautiful and unique work. Dimensions: 38.5" high, 96" wide, .6" deep. Folded dimensions: 38.5" high, 16.5" wide, 4" deep.

A very colourful and captivating large six-panel byôbu (folding screen) with a refined continuous painting of a luscious flower garden filled with many different types of chrysanthemums (kiku), next to a winding river. This multi-coloured painting is set on a shiny gold-leaf background, and the chrysanthemum flowers are painted by using shell paste (gofun) in low relief.
