About the Item
Interesting 19th century Japanese Edo period six-panel byobu screen depicting the thirty six immortals of poetry (Sanjurokkasen). Each portrait is accompanied by their poems. The poets are from the Asuka, Nara, and Heian periods. Painted in the Kano school style though executed in the Tosa school manner. The portraits are set in a wood frame with a dramatic gilt background. The paintings have a desirable aged patina with fading, but their beautiful robes still having vivid color. From an estate in Beverly Hills, CA. The entire full list of all 36 immortal poets can be found in the photos.

- Condition:Wear consistent with age and use. Beautifully crafted with solid joinery and construction. Lovely aged patina and fading on the portraits as seen in photos. Age appropriate wear with minor losses, fading, foxing, and one 3 inch tear on gilt background.
