About the Item
An absolutely gorgeous, monumental, exceptionally large Korean ten-panel Sipjangsaengdo Byobu folding screen depicting the ten symbols of longevity—sun, mountain, water, rock, cloud, crane, deer, turtle, pine, and yeongji mushrooms. The artist must harmonize these ten different themes/symbols/ elements effectively on the large folding screen canvas.
The screen is hand-painted in vivid, rich, bright blue and green colors against a vast tree and waterfall-laden mountainous landscape - the scene presents a spectacular vista of the Daoist Shangri-La where nothing perishes. Playful spotted deer are seen peacefully frolicking around the herb of eternal youth in the pine tree forest. Cranes are flying above the floating clouds and mist-shrouded mountains and resting in the peach tree below. Turtles/ tortoises are swimming in the river. The radiant sun is on the top-left side of the screen and the pale moon at the right. Quite spectacular in scope. design and artistic execution. The King occasionally commissioned Sipjangsaengdo long-life screens as gifts to important subjects/ dignitaries on New Year’s day and the screens were used on special palace occasions such as royal banquets or significant birthdays and anniversaries.
This original work is hand painted on paper and attached to fabric within the wood frame.
Original decorative period brass hardware adds another wonderful touch.
We are listing the screen as 20th century but feel it could be older, perhaps from the Joseon Dynasty.
A spectacular work. Quite rare and scarce as Korean Shipjangsaengdo screens rarely come to market. Would be a great addition to any Korean/ Asian art or artifacts collections or a very eye-catching stand-alone work in any setting. No doubt a bold statement piece both aesthetically and in sheer size.
