About the Item
An elaborate, large six-panel byôbu (folding screen) featuring a detailed genre painting on gold leaf, capturing the vibrancy of festive scenes from the Edo period.
Central to the piece is a procession of geisha and their maiko, leisurely strolling along a promenade to admire the cherry blossoms. Set in the backdrop is a glimpse into an establishment where samurai noblemen are seen relishing in leisure, enjoying red bream, and watching a dance performance set to shamisen music. In the forefront, the shrine gate stands, guarded by the deities of thunder and wind, Raijin and Fūjin.
The upper right corner of the screen presents a bustling waterfront scene with a variety of people in leisurely strolls. The other corners offer peeks into more intimate settings where individuals are engaged in smoking, eating, and celebrating.
All these diverse scenes are encased within rich gold leaf clouds. Framing the panels are two elegant silk borders - a slender brown brocade and a wider blue one adorned with a floral pattern, all set within a black lacquer wooden frame with its rich original hardware engraved with scrolling foliage.

Located in Amsterdam, NL
Beautiful, large two-panel byôbu (room divider) with a serene painting of red-leaved bamboo and rocks on an oxidized silver leaf background. Silver leaf continuously undergoes the process of oxidation, which creates a beautiful aged patina.
On the left an inscription from a ‘Zekku’ poem by the Chinese poet Yang Zai (1271?1323), titled: Shan shang zhu (bamboo (painted) on a fan).

Why would people plant a lot of bamboos?
The shade of a single culm is also beautiful.
In the autumn night it rocks on the wind,
And the fresh sound echoes in my dream.
