About the Item

Tessai Tomioka Hailing from Kyoto, Tessai Tomioka, a prominent southern painter, immersed himself in the study of Kokugaku-Chinese Classics and poetics during his formative years. Influenced profoundly by the esteemed poet Rengetsu Otagaki, he evolved into a Gakuboku, or scholar-artist. In the Edo period, Tessai actively engaged with imperialist patriots, contributing significantly to national affairs. Post the Meiji Restoration, he assumed the role of chief priest at the Shrine Otori Yamato Ishigami Shrine Izumi. However, later in life, he chose seclusion, resigning from active engagements. Establishing Tano village, Tessai collaborated with Taniguchi Shigeruyama and others to form the Japan Nanga Association. Balancing his roles as a scholar and a free-spirited artist, he pierced through conventional attitudes. Acknowledged as a leading figure in literati painting circles, Tessai held esteemed positions as an Imperial household artist and a member of the Imperial Art Academy. In 1924, at the age of 89, he left an indelible mark on the artistic landscape. Japanese Meiji Riverside Scroll Painting, c. 1900
Located in Chicago, IL
Although western painting was initially embraced during Japan’s Meiji period (1868-1912), artists brought on a revival of traditional painting styles as they sought to create a modern Japanese style with roots in the past. This exquisite hanging scroll demonstrates the preference for soft layering of gray tones with judicious use of color. The landscape is rendered in soft ink washes that subtly distinguish between water, mountain, and sky. The scroll painting...
