About the Item

Remarkable pair of early 19th century Japanese late Edo period screens depicting summer chrysanthemums growing along a brushwood fence. Ink and color pigments over a dramatic silver leaf ground. Kano school influence with moriage flowers. The love of chrysanthemums was immortalized by Tao Yanming (365-427) in one of his poems: "Plucking chrysanthemums beneath the eastern fence, leisurely I caught a glimpse of the southern mountain". This poem is loved for its literati lifestyle. An existence that involved independence from society and employment. It is based on improving one's soul through travel and intellectual pursuits (Harlan Urwiler). This pair of serene scenes seem to capture the essence of this poem. The screens are set in black lacquered frames with distinctive silk brocade borders. Impressive to view in person as delicate intricacies painted on the silver ground are difficult to see in photos. From an estate in Bel Air, CA.
