Philippine oil painting on canvas by Nunelucio Alvarado, depicting a young sacada (sugar cane croppers)couple burying their stillborn child standing expressionless in front of the gravesite with the infant wrapped in cloth and a cross grave marker. In the background evidence of troops supported by the Americans and a chemical factory belching smoke. The painting is signed by the artist in blue on a black background in the narrow margin at the bottom of the painting: Nunelucio in the left had corner and Alvarado 1984 in the right hand corner. Measuring: 48” x 34”. Simple wood frame. Excellent condition. Provenance: Gallerie Andrea, Manilla Private Collection, New York About the artist: NUNELUCIO ALVARADO Iconic Negrense painter Nunelucio Melocoton Alvarado is regarded as one of the most prominent visual artists in the Philippines and has won international critical acclaim for his art rooted in Social Realism. Alvarado has had at least 50 solo exhibitions all over the Philippines as well as in Singapore, and has participated in numerous group shows in Australia, Japan and the U.S.A. His artworks that manifest the perpetually shifting panorama of Philippine society, highlight environmental and cultural degradation. His stylized depiction of the dark side of humanity encompasses primal terrors, psycho-sexual and social oppression, particularly the plight of marginalized sectors such as the sacada (seasonal sugarcane plantation workers) and fishermen in his native Negros Occidental, their struggle to survive and conquer the ominous powers pervasive in their lives. An advocate of art as weapon for social change, he stimulates artists' social involvement in the agri-rural communities through the art organizations that he co-founded. Alvarado is a member of the Bacolod’s BAA (Black Artists in Asia) and founder of Pamilya Pintura and Pintor Kulapol. His lifetime of art heraldry is devoted to the uplift of Philippine Art and culture and the attainment of social justice for the sacadas and fisherfolk of the Philippines. Bio: NUNELUCIO ALVARADO earned his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines. He studied Advertising at School of Architecture and Fine Arts in La Consolacion College in Bacolod. He is a receiver of the Kabayao-Ledesma Scholarship Grant for painting in 1968. He is a true blooded Negrense and born in Sagay City, Negros Occidental on 05 May 1950. He became the art Director of Syano Artlink and founded Pamilya Pintura and Pintor Kulapol in Bacolod. He is known for doing progressive works of art that depicts faces, plight and struggle of the Negros-based Sakadas (laborers hired from outside) and marginalized sectors. He is a founding member of Concerned Artists of Negros and the Black Artists of Asia. His recent exhibit was in 2014 entitled ‘Diskarte ni Nunelucio’ showed in Charlie's Art Gallery in Bacolod. He has put up several exhibits locally and abroad, such as in Singapore (1996 and 2004), Japan (1997) and the US (1998). He is the Philippine representative of the first Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art in Australia in 1993. He won awards from the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) in 1992 and 2004. He also won the grand prizes in Philip Morris Philippine Art Awards in 1997 and 1999.
