About the Item

A fantastic original woodblock print by famed French artist Paul Jacoulet titled "Le Dieu Vivant, Nagano, Japon. (The Living God, Nagano, Japan)" Jacoulet was famed for his techniques involving lacquers, embossing, mica, and metal pigments, and with experimentations with powdered semi-precious stones. In his complete catalog raisonne book "The Prints of Paul Jacoulet", Richard Miles comments on this particular work "This was Jacoulet's New Year's print for a shrinking group of subscribers. He was feeling unwell, and looking for wider outlets. This lavish effort used some of his expensive pigments, including increasingly costly metallics. It was less popular than he had hoped, and Jacoulet started to plan a larger project that would regain the popularity that he felt slipping away." The print is from a edition of 350 (it is likely noted on the verso but we have not removed from the frame) however Richard Miles specifies "fewer than 165 impressions" were actually printed. The carver was Maeda, printer Onodera. Sealed with his red stamp and hand signed in pencil within the image by the artist. A beautiful and quite engaging work. Would be a great addition to collectors of Paul Jacoulet's work or Japanese print/ art collection or make for an eye catching stand alone accent artwork in any setting. Framed dimensions: 21" high, 17.5" wide, 1".5 deep.

Mizuno Toshikata Japanese Woodblock Print First Call of the Warbler, 36 Beauties
Located in Studio City, CA
An absolutely gorgeous and relatively rare original woodblock print by Japanese artist/printmaker Mizuno Toshikata titled "First Call of the Warbler" from his series Thirty-Six Selected Beauties (“Sanju Rokka Sen”) which he created to illustrate the daily activities of various Japanese women from different time periods and walks of life. This work features a geisha practicing the shamisen under the bright light of a full moon as the night's first warbler songbird joins her on a cherry tree branch just outside her window. It is a quite beautiful and serene scene and one of Toshikata most coveted images. This work was created circa 1892 during the Mejia period (1868-1912). It is signed and sealed by the artist with the image. Mizuno Toshikata was born on March 6, 1866 as Mizuno Kumejiro in Tokyo. When he was 13 years old, his father sent him to the printmaking school of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. Later Toshikata Mizuno...
