About the Item

A large, earthly toned, dramatically composed print, with just the right touch of humor, is by Japanese master printmaker Yoshitoshi Mori who was famed for his kappazuri stencil printing technique. In the 1950s Mori became one of the key artist in the Sosaku Hanga movement (which stressed the artist as the sole creator of any given work as opposed to a collaborative effort). This print of a Samurai carrying a woman on his back (I believe she represents or is the embodiment of a mythological Japanese demon) is signed and stamped, dated (1969) and numbered (37/50) by the artist. As I have never seen this image before I am assuming it is quite rare. The work is framed and matted. Framed dimensions: 29" high, 27" wide, .75" deep Considered to be one of Japan's finest and most innovative 20th century print makers, Mori has exhibited throughout the world and his works can be found in permanent collections in such museums and galleries as: Art Gallery of Greater Victoria Art Institute of Chicago Baltimore Museum of Art Barcelona Art Museum Berlin National Museum British Museum Brooklyn Museum Cincinnati Art Museum Cleveland Museum of Art De Young Museum, San Francisco Harvard University Art Museums Honolulu Academy of Art Japan Folk Crafts Museum, Tokyo Library of Congress Los Angeles County Museum of Art Metropolitan Museum of Art Minnesota Museum of Art, St. Paul Muscarelle Museum of Art, Williamsburg Museum of Fine Arts Boston Museum of Modern Art, New York National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo Philadelphia Museum of Art Portland Art Museum Yale University Art Gallery.

A quite large and engaging fine print by famed Japanese printmaker Yoshitoshi Mori. The print portrays an ancient Samurai, one of Mori's favorite subjects, with an arrowhead in hand. It is stamped, signed, dated (1985) and numbered (12/50) by the artist. The original 1985 price of 300,000 yen can be seen written along the bottom edge of print. I have only seen this print offered once before making it relatively rare. A must have for collectors or admirers of Yoshitoshi Mori's work or lovers of Japanese prints in general. Would stand out in any setting and/or collection. The print has been professionally framed.
