Natori Shunsen Signed Japanese Woodblock Print Onoe Kikugoro VI Adachi Motoemom

About the Item

A wonderful and quite rare woodblock print by famed Japanese artist/ master printmaker Natori Shunsen of well-known Japanese actor Onoe Kikugoro VI in the drama "Tengajaya-mura (or The Revenge at Tengajaya)" and titled "Onoe Kikugoro VI as Adachi Motoemon" from Natori's series Thirty-Six Portraits of Actors. In 1925, Natori and his publisher, Watanabe, worked together on a series of thirty-six actor portraits. The resulting series contains some of Natori's finest kabuki designs. This particular print was published by Watanabe in 1925 and was known to have a limited edition of 150 impressions, which at the time were acquired exclusively by subscription only. The print has both the Watanabe seal as well as Natori's signature and seal (lower right edge). This work can be found in The National Gallery of Australia. A striking work overall and a fantastic addition to any Japanese print/art collection or eye-catching stand-alone accent artwork when framed.     In very good vintage condition with some minor trimming along the lower left margin (apparently common with this work) else no discernable issue (please see photos). A good, clean state and a rich colorful impression. Striking and engaging overall.
