About the Item
Antique Middle Eastern Brass Inkwell Qalamdan.
A 19th century brass decorated Middle Eastern Islamic Qalamdan. The Qalamdan is in solid brass, etched on all sides with engraved geometric patterns on the lapels.
It consists of an inkwell and a pen compartment of typical tubular form with an interior cavity to store a reed pen. Attached to the body is an inkwell with engraved geometric designs with a shell style cover.
The inkwell and the pen holder both have hinged lids, one with a shell motif and the other with a flagship
The piece measures 8 1/2" inches long x 1 3/4" inches high x 2" inches deep.

Antique Ottoman, Persian Scribe's Pen Box Inkwell/Qalamdan, Circa 1850.
The Divit Qalamdan was used by calligraphers to store their brushes or their feathers in the long pen box, and dry ink in the square container. Their use was very frequent during travels, and they were thus often carried by scribes serving merchants and representatives of the government.
