Chinese Carved Longyan Wood Stand, Late Qing Dynasty

About the Item

An exquisite late Qing dynasty display Stand of longyan wood, carved as a miniature "kang" table. The center panel features an amazing grain that delights the eye, while a soft glow seems to emanate from just below the surface. The front and back aprons have been carved and pierced with a design of writhing, facing dragons battling over the flaming pearl of wisdom. The side aprons feature an additional carved and pierced single dragon motif as well. Dramatic lion heads at each of the corners extend to cabriole legs ending in ball and claw feet. Longyan (lit. dragon eye) wood, also called tiger skin wood, comes from the tropical fruit bearing longyan tree. The wood is notoriously difficult to work with, but the lustrous, shimmering grain and rich golden tones of the finished product are considered to rival even the best hardwoods.
