Straits Chinese Carved Hardwood Bamboo Inlay Display Stand, circa 1900

About the Item

A remarkable straits Chinese (also known as Peranakan or Nyonya) carved hardwood and bamboo inlaid and embellished table-form stand, originally for display or incense, 19th-20th century. The stand features a stunning floating veneer panel of resplendent burl wood framed in hardwood. The top of the hardwood frame inlaid with an intricate inlaid bamboo marquetry border, reminiscent of Dutch marquetry furniture, but distinctly Peranakan. The inlaid decoration featuring reserves of birds and flowering prunus, stylized butterflies to the corners, imitation brocade, and "shou" (longevity) characters. The sides of the frame bamboo embellished in relief with further birds and flowers, and stylized geometric kui dragons at the corners. The narrow waist and wide apron have been intricately carved and pierced with a scrolling floral and foliate chrysanthemum design. The stand sits upon squat legs with ball and claw feet. Above the legs, the corners have been formed as comically fierce taotie (ogres or gargoyles). The eyes, fangs, and bucked teeth of the beasts inlaid with bamboo. The Peranakan are the descendants of Chinese merchants and sailors who settled in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore starting in the 15th century. They are also referred to as Straits-Chinese and Nyonya. Ethnically Chinese, the insular communities eventually created a new and vibrant culture based on Chinese traditions, but blending elements of their adopted homelands.
