Two Compatible Japanese Lacquered Calligraphy Stands

About the Item

A decorative and colorful compatible pair of Japanese Calligraphy Stands in gilt and lacquer decoration. The red lift tops with elaborate lacquered and gilt decoration of birds and snakes in landscapes. Fine black lacquered and gilt interiors with a peacock and flowers on one lid and a river landscape on the other. Both with compartments, some with lids. Raised on shaped bases in red and gilt with panels with hilly landscapes. H. 31", W. 17 1/2", Depth top 13 1/2" Condition: Please see detail photos. One of the stands with open joinery on the top front black molding, missing metal corners, escutcheon and stable age cracks on the sides, the other with missing top front black molding and corners, scrapes and wear to the bases. Despite the signs of age the pair retain a dramatic and fine presentation. ,
