About the Item

An elegant Korean serving tray / personal dining table, carved and joined zelkova (keyaki) wood, Joseon Dynasty, mid 19th century, Korea. The elegant and sturdy tray table, known as a soban in Korea, features a twelve sided top with a raised and slightly everted lip, a shaped apron and spandrels, and graceful cabriole "tiger" legs supported by a stretcher. The table top of a solid single large piece of highly and attractively figured zelkova (keyaki) wood. Zelkova is a prized wood in Korea, often associated with protection. Soban are traditional serving trays and personal dining tables used in Korea. This one can be described as a "hojokban" or "tiger leg" type, based on the leg shape, which curls out at the tips.
