Antique Korean Lacquer Wood Soban Table Joseon Period

About the Item

An antique wood table from Korea from late 19th century (end of Joseon Dynasty). This type of light weight table is called "Soban" in Korean. which means "Small Tray". It was widely used primarily as individual dining table to present and serve foods, but also as small desk, incense burner holder and altar table. Its small and low profile fits the traditional personal and portable use on the floor. The current table on offer was made from Zelkova wood and finished in a red lacquer. The top surface with the slightly raised rim has a twelve-sided shape with soft corners. Its surface features expressive dark wood grains that under a glossier finish compared to the legs, possibly due to the extensive use and reapplication of lacquer over the time. The unfinished side under the table shows the same grains from the Zelkova plank. The table is supported by four outwardly turned legs resembling the legs of tiger, therefore this specific type is also known as "Hojokban" (Tiger Leg Tray). Two stretcher bars connect the legs for further stabilization. The legs are covered with darker lacquer likely original as it was not polished as much. There are wood joint nails visible on the top surface. Under the legs, the original dowel construction is also visible. This is an antique piece and displays wonderful patina from use and care over the years. The structure is integrally original. The National Folk Musuem of Korea in Seoul has a large collection of similar Hojokbans such as item 000213, 001516 and 001626.

  • Antique Korean Wedding Bandaji Chest Joseon Dynasty

A striking Korean Bandaji with lots of original patina circa 19th century of late Joseon Dynasty. Bandaji is known as drop front half-opening chest that was used to store family valuables and beddings. The Bandaji on offer was made in Pyongyang area in now North Korea and was clearly intended as a wedding chest. Constructed in limewood (also known as Lindenwood), which is rather plain and lacks grains, the chest was instead sumptuously decorated with nickel-copper (Paktong or white copper) plates, stripes and studs. Covering nearly the entire front of the cabinet, the metal plates were placed with eye-pleasing symmetry pattern. The top row is centered with a large square lock plate with latch and a heavy fish lock (no key), flanked by a pair of pulls set on plates in longevity mushroom pattern (lingzi). The middle row has a large cloud-form hinge in the center, flanked by three vertical pairs of rectangular hinges. The lower row features a large embossed and chased square plate with a character "Double happiness" in the center, a Hanja character reserved for the wedding ceremony. On both sides, large pair...
