Late 19th Century Chinese Mother of Pearl Snuff Bottles

About the Item

A mixture of finely powdered tobacco, herbs, and spices, snuff was introduced to China in the 17th century by Western diplomats. Initially reserved for ranking members of Qing-dynasty society, the practice provided an opportunity to display one's refined aesthetic through collectible snuff bottles. These late 19th century snuff bottles are each carved of mother-of-pearl and bone for a soft color palette and a delicate, feminine aesthetic. The wider bottle is finely etched with flowers and butterflies, with orchids on one side and spider chrysanthemums on the other. The footed base is etched with a maker's mark and the neck stoppered with a jadeite cap complete with a bone snuff spoon. The other bottle has a vertical, oblong form and is carved in low relief with a portrait of a robed lady on either side. Shimmering with iridescent color, the pair make for a delightful accent to a bookcase or the beginning of a lifelong collection. Wooden stand pictured is not included.
