This vintage Chinese snuff bottle, exquisitely crafted from mother of pearl (MOP), is a fine example of cameo carving, a technique that creates raised relief images by carving into the layers of the material. The bottle features incised details that enhance the depth and texture of the design.
On one side of the bottle, there is a beautifully carved garden scene depicting a lady in traditional dress. She is elegantly holding a palm leaf above her head, using it as an umbrella, a poetic and graceful gesture that is typical of classical Chinese imagery. The attention to detail in her attire and posture reflects the high level of craftsmanship.
The other side of the bottle features another lady, this time sitting leisurely and looking at a mirror. This scene might represent a moment of introspection or adornment, common themes in Chinese art that celebrate beauty and contemplation.
