About the Item

This antique hand carved Chinese bamboo root brush pot is in excellent condition. No cracks in the wood and all carving is in great condition with no chips or missing pieces. The wood is smooth and soft to the touch with no rough areas at all. This dark brown brush pot has carvings encircling the entire piece with raised Chinese characters on one side. There are an abundance of trees with twisted trunks and branches. On one side of the pot are two figures on galloping horseback in a forest. Other figures include a group of five figures, three of whom are observing a writing tablet while the other two and standing beside them. Another figure appears to be bathing in a waterfall. The brush pot sits on 3 wooden feet and the top and bottom rims are crafted from different hardwood than the cylindrical body. There are a few areas where the carvings have intentionally created holes in the pot as part of the design. This pot looks beautiful from any angle due to its intricate carvings on all sides. This Chinese brush pot measures 7" high ( 17.8 cm) by 5.75" (14.6 cm) diameter at top. Since the shape is slightly oval the diameter at top also measures: 5.125" (13 cm) Brush pots were used by Chinese and Korean scholars between the 18th and 19th century. Calligraphy brushes were generally kept in the brush pots but intermittently, they were also used to stock paper rolls (rolled-up papers) hence they are sometime also called paper holders.
