18th century Chinese Huanghuali Brush Pot (Bitong)

About the Item

Chinese Huanghuali Brush Pot, Bitong, an elegant simple form, well carved from one honey coloured and nicely figured limb of huanghuali (Dalbergia Odorifera) hardwood, carved as a thin walled cylinder (5/16” thick and 3-1/8”deep) with slight flared and concave contour on the sides, slightly convex mouth rim and slightly concave base flat and unmarked Size: 4-1/16” high. Mouth: 2-3/8” in diameter. Base: 2-1/4” in diameter. Qing Dynasty, 18th Century. Provenance: Japanese Private Collection, Kyoto

    Antique Chinese Cinnabar Lacquer Tray/Stand with Dragon Design, Guangxu Period (1875-1908). A dark vermillion red carved cinnabar lacquered Scholar’s tray on raised and footed supports. The top and sides of the tray carved in tight geometric diminishing square hatch ground with blossom centers. The aprons carved in deep relief on each side with two opposing auspicious five-clawed dragons chasing the flaming pearl amongst the clouds. The four corners with square curved feet supports. The underside lacquered black and unmarked. 4.75 in. high x 15 in. wide x 12.75 in. deep (12 x 38 x 32.5 cm). 4 lbs. 6 oz. (1983g.)
