19th c. Burmese Reclining Buddha – Rare Iconographic Form, Mandalay period
About the Item
Burma (Myanmar), Mandalay Period, 19th Century
Material: Wood with traces of original gilt and lacquer
Dimensions: 160 cm length × 40 cm height
This finely carved reclining Buddha sculpture from the Mandalay period represents an uncommon and symbolically powerful pose in Buddhist iconography.
Depicted lying on his right side in the parinirvana posture, the Buddha is shown in the moment of his final passing into nirvana—a representation of ultimate release from the cycle of suffering. While seated and standing Buddhas are more commonly seen in Burmese art, reclining figures are significantly rarer, particularly in this elongated format and devotional scale.
Crafted from wood and originally gilded, the figure bears the elegant proportions, stylized drapery, and serene expression characteristic of Mandalay-period craftsmanship.
A contemplative and visually arresting work, offering both spiritual depth and historical rarity.
