19th c. Wooden Gilt Burmese Standing Buddha statue - Mandalay period

About the Item

Standing Buddha – Mandalay Period Burma (Myanmar), 19th Century Material: Wood with original gilding and red lacquer Dimensions: 106 × 55 cm This commanding and elegantly detailed standing Buddha is a fine example of devotional sculpture from the Mandalay period in 19th-century Burma. Carved from wood and adorned with original gilding and red lacquer, the figure displays the distinctive stylistic hallmarks of the era: an oval face, finely modeled features, elongated ears, and richly ornamented robes with delicate scrolling motifs. The Buddha stands in a graceful posture with both hands extended downward, performing the varada mudra, the gesture of compassion and charitable giving. The robe’s hems are skillfully flared outward, creating a sense of movement and draped refinement, emphasizing both balance and divine presence. Mandalay-period Buddha figures are celebrated for their serene elegance and spiritual clarity, and this piece is no exception—radiating calm, generosity, and timeless artistry. A beautifully preserved and visually striking example of Burmese sacred sculpture.
