19th Century Chinese Figure of a Guardian God

About the Item

This 19th-century hand-carved polychromatic wood figure depicts a powerful Guardian, poised on a recumbent tiger with his right fist raised in a striking motion, his eyes bulging with fierce determination. In his left hand, he wields a scepter to suppress evil spirits. The Guardian is adorned with a traditional hat and handmade cotton shoes, showcasing finely stitched soles. An aperture in the back of the statue, traditionally used to hold prayer notes, adds to its historical significance. Though aged, the splendid original paints remain visible, enhancing the statue's character and authenticity. This remarkable, all-original 19th-century piece is believed to bring protection and ensure one's safety.
