About the Item

A large and vibrantly decorated Chinese famille rose enameled porcelain figure of Guanyin, marked Zeng Longsheng (1901 - 1964), but of later manufacture, circa 1980's, China. The tall and graceful figure of Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, is crafted of porcelain and decorated in a bight and lively famille rose enamels. Guanyin stands upright and bare-footed upon a circular lotus pedestal seemingly emerging from the crashing waves below, a single large lotus bud to the side. She holds a gilt vase in one hand, said to hold pure water capable of alleviating suffering. She holds a pearl, known as the Pearl of Light, between the thumb and middle finger of her other hand, while performing shuni mudra, the gesture of patience. Her moonlike face is luminous, with soft features, kind eyes, blushed cheeks, and rouged lips pursed in a small smile. Her hair is arranged in a voluminous chignon and covered by a cowl. An image of Amitabha Buddha graces the center of the chignon. Her lithe and willowy body is covered by long, heavy, and richly decorated robes, including a yellow ground robe decorated with chrysanthemum and plum blossoms, a dark blue ground overcoat decorated with chrysanthemum blossoms against a cloud patterned field and green ground hem. Her cowl of attractive orange. The underside with an impressed Zeng Longsheng mark. Zeng Longsheng (1901 - 1964) was an important Jingdezhen potter famous for producing figural Buddhist porcelain sculptures with beautiful enamels. Later pieces with his mark, such as this one, honor that tradition.

Pair Chinese White Glazed Guanyin, Qing Dynasty, 18th Century, China
Located in Austin, TX
A sublime and rare pair of Chinese white glazed porcelain figures of Guanyin, attributed to Tang Ying (1682 - 1756), Qing Dynasty, Qianlong Period, China. This ethereal pair of white glazed porcelain figures depict the revered Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, Guanyin. Guanyin is portrayed standing, wearing heavy robes that drape beautifully around her figure. Bare feet peek out from under the hem of the robes. Her hair piled in a high chignon and covered by a cowl. The treatment of the hair, finely textured, unglazed, and with remnants of darker pigment, is typical of works by Tang Yin (1682 - 1756), who was the head of the imperial porcelain works at Jingdezhen. Guanyin's beatific face is set in a serene smile, with a small, flat nose, and downcast, heavily lidded, almond shaped eyes. A simple beaded necklace graces her chest. Her hands held out, and may have once held attributes. The hands were originally removable, but have since been permanently attached. The figures crafted of a fine porcelain and glazed all over in a supple white glaze. One figure bears a label from the Rafi Mottahedeh collection to the back. Provenance: Chinese Porcelain Company...
