About the Item

Chinese Spinach Nephrite Jade Immortal with Lotus, Mid-20th Century Dimensions: 5” H x 5” W x 3” D (including base) A finely carved Chinese figure of a celestial maiden, sculpted from a single piece of deep green spinach nephrite jade, permanently mounted on a traditional hardwood stand. Dating to the mid-20th century, the immortal is shown in flowing robes with swirling ribbons, holding a round fan in one hand and gesturing toward a vessel of blossoming lotus flowers—symbols of purity, peace, and spiritual awakening. Carved from richly colored nephrite jade known as "spinach jade" for its dark, mottled green hue, the sculpture displays graceful movement and refined detailing, from the draped sash and layered garments to the elegantly curving stems of the lotus. The round fan (tuanshan) evokes feminine refinement and serenity, while the vase (ping, 瓶) and lotus flowers together express the auspicious phrase ping’an (peace and purity). The figure is permanently affixed to its carved, scalloped hardwood base, finished in a dark stain with a raised lip and four bracket feet—typical of mid-20th-century Chinese display traditions for scholars’ objects and jade carvings. Condition: Excellent vintage condition, with minor natural variation and surface polish consistent with age and material. A beautifully symbolic and skillfully executed jade figure, ideal for collectors of scholars’ objects, Chinese jade, or spiritual iconography.
