About the Item

A contemporary Japanese bamboo sculpture entitled Light at Dawn (Gyoko) made in 2004 by Kawano Shoko (B. 1957). This airy piece is unconventional in form for not being a basket but a pure none-functional sculptural form. Constructed with madake, smoked nemagari dake (hobichiku) and rattan, using a combination of sukashi-ajiro (open twill plaiting), thousand-line construction, twining and circular plaiting. The piece is signed to the inside inner rim in incised characters Shoko, together with the original wood storage box (tomobako) signed with title and wrapping cloth with sealed Shoko. See a nearly identical piece in the Lloyd Cotsen Japanese Bamboo Basket Collection, see page 73 of the book "Master of Bamboo" by Rinne. From an important UK collection. Provenance available to the buyer.

A bamboo table top sculpture by Japanese bamboo artist Honma Hideaki (b. 1959) made in early 2000s. The basket form sculpture was a creative ikebana and could be used as such or simply as a okimono (decorative piece). The piece is of an unusual oval dish form with the wall irregularly outlined with bent bamboo, thousand-line construction form the upper part of the wall and the patterned twining was added in the lower part to give it a visual shift from airiness to solidity. A large piece of bamboo was selected as the base. Signed "Hide" underneath. An American Midwest collection. Honma Hideaki was born in Sado, Niigata prefecture. He studied under Honma Kazuaki...
