Japanese Seated Praying Buddha Handsome Antique Stone
About the Item
An older and substantial late 19th to early 20th century stone Buddha/Jizo Guardian sculpture in a mudra of prayer
Good garden candidate
In Japan, Kṣitigarbha, known as Jizō, or respectfully as Ojizō-sama, is one of the most loved of all Japanese divinities. His statues are a common sight, especially by roadsides and installed in private shrines. Anjali or the praying Mudra is the practice of meeting the hands together by the sternum in a “prayer position.” It’s used frequently during the practice of yoga, commonly at the opening and closing of yoga classes and during other yoga asanas.
Anjali is a Sanskrit term that means to offer and the term Mudra means “seal.” So, basically, it is the salutation seal and symbolizes that we are “honoring and celebrating this moment.”
This handsome hand carved example is sculpted from solid medium granite stone, still retains much of its fine details and and dates to the early to mid 20th century.
Its a good garden candidate with an authentic and sublime spiritual aura.
Good condition with overall softening of the lines and contours.
Handsomely weathered from appropriate age.
Dimensions: 17 inches tall and 8 inches diameter at base
History of Jizo:
Jizo Bosatsu is one of the most beloved of all Japanese divinities, Jizo works to ease the suffering and to answer the prayers of the living for health, success, children, and all manner of mundane petitions. In modern Japan, Jizo is a savior par excellence, a friend to all. He is notably a protector of travelers and children.
