About the Item

An arch shaped piece with high relief carving of a multi-armed deity standing on a winged feline and wielding several weapons. A small figure appears below right. The fierce female demon buffalo slayer carved in openwork with her principal two hands holding a spear-ended trident and another attribute and her remaining eight hands with Shivite attributes, standing astride a winged dog that straddles the beheaded buffalo, Mahisasura wielding a knife atop the headless body. Remnants of black lacquer, white gesso and flecks of red pigment in the deity's third eye, repaired breaks– 29 ¼ inches (74.2 cm.) high. Compare with a series of limestone carvings in the Archaeological Garden, Lalitpur, Patan, Nepal. Measures: height 29.5”, wide 22", depth 8". Condition: Please see all detail photos. Several repaired breaks delineated by darker pigment. Areas age blackened and various expected chips and nicks to the stone mentioned for accuracy as the presentation remains strong and arresting.
