Small stone carved rabbit statue / 19th-mid 20th century / Around Korea

About the Item

This is a carved stone figurine of a rabbit with a unique design not found in old Japanese stone statues. From the taste of the shape, we can infer that it was made in Korea from the 19th to the middle of the 20th century. The material is stone with a rough texture, and the marks left by hand are everywhere, giving the piece the warmth of handcraft. The small size (height 13 cm, width 22 cm, depth 8.3 cm) is also attractive, and the figure standing still with both ears erect gives a sense of tranquility, as if time has stopped. Rabbits have long been a part of traditional Korean culture. In Korean folklore and traditional paintings, the “Moon Rabbit” appears and is depicted making rice cakes in the moon, symbolizing fertility, longevity, and rebirth. The moon rabbit has also been used as a decoration for the Chinese New Year, to pray for a safe delivery, and to wish for the healthy growth of children. Rather than being realistic, the deformation emphasizes the “loveliness” and “friendliness” of the rabbit, and the rounded form, large eyes, and simple carving on the legs combine to soothe the viewer's heart. The silhouette, especially when viewed from the side, is beautiful from any angle, and the sculpture has a beauty that blends in with any space, regardless of whether it is Japanese or Western. Stone carvings with rabbit motifs such as this are rarely seen at our suppliers and are rare one-of-a-kind pieces. Just by sitting it on a shelf, a display shelf, or in a corner of an entranceway, it will add humor and gentleness to the space. It is highly collectible and is especially recommended for those interested in animal carvings and Asian folk art. There are no large, noticeable losses, but there are small chips on the tips of the ears and the tips of the hands. Please see the detailed images. Why not welcome one of these playful and tranquil stone animals in your room? Weight: 2.8 kg
