About the Item
Vintage patinated Hindu bronze Shiva "Lord of the Dance" sculpture, circa 1950s. The piece is in good vintage condition with a great patina and measures 10"W x 3"D x 11.5"H. It is a sacred object that represents all things coming to a natural end and beginning again new. Shiva is frozen in the moment of dance within the cosmic circle of fire that is the continuous creation and destruction of the universe. The sculpture portrays the Hindu god Shiva in one of his iconic forms as Lord of the Dance, Nataraja. Shiva is the god of creation, protection, and destruction. HIs dance is said to give life to creation, and when his dance ends, so will the universe. Shiva has long, elegant limbs. One leg is raised high in movement, the other planted firmly on the ground, squashing the dwarf demon Apasmara, a representation of spiritual ignorance, underfoot.
Shiva's four arms perform various actions. His two primary arms are held in specific poses, with one performing abhaya mudra, the gesture of fearlessness or reassurance, the other in gaja hasta, symbolizing salvation. He holds a daramu, or hand drum, in one raised arm, beating out the rhythm of his dance and of creation. His other hand holds the agni, the purifying fire of destruction. A halo of flames, said to encompass the cosmos, surrounds him.
The sculpture exudes movement. Shiva seems to dance energetically and ecstatically, with hair streaming out in long locks behind him. Images of the River Goddess Ganga, a cobra, a skull, and a crescent moon are all present in his locks as well. The sculpture is crafted with exceptional detail, highlighting Shiva's divine form surrounded by a beautifully intricate prahbhamandala (flaming arch). Shiva dances atop Apasmara, the dwarf symbolizing ignorance, illustrating the victory of knowledge over illusioriate aging. Gorgeous patina! #4603
