The island of Timor gave rise to a distinctive practice of creating traditional masks whose precise origins and significance remain uncertain. Portraying both male and female ancestors, they were held by men during dances and other ceremonies, including celebrations of victory in war. Created for slaked lime, a component for the social practice of chewing “Betelnut”, globular form resembling an areca nut with round aperture at the shoulder and decorative overhead handle stylized in such a way that it could be interpreted as a dragon with tablets with four legs and feet adhering to the shoulder or a stem branch with tendrils terminating in raised short spikes and molded oblong shapes resembling bunches of areca nut, all covered in a crackled transparent glaze with copper green on the handle, sturdy foot rim decorated by a band of iron oxide brown where the body meets the foot, the base is unglazed.
