About the Item

Antique Palembang Man's Songket and Ikat Ceremonial Head Cloth (iket kepala). A woven silk textile with natural dyes, weft ikat pattern, gold thread supplementary weft weave. Textiles of this caliber come from the southern region of Palembang, South Sumatra which is famous for its red silks, often featuring subtle weft ikat backgrounds, with songket brocade in supplementary gold and silver weft yarns. The red ground of the cloth with ikat floral forms and gold thread rosettes in the center square. The border asymmetrically organized with floral border patterns. A tour de force of Muslim Malay style, skill and design in a square format, having taken several months to complete. Restored condition with textile repairs, like material glued over holes or tears, overall good condition, suitable for mounting. Please examine photographs closely. Circa 1880.
