About the Item

Vintage Indonesian Kemben Batik Tulis (Breast cloth), Jogja (Yogyakarta), Java 1970. This kemben batik has a hand-drawn design on cotton by wax resist canting. The traditional ceremonial design format juxtaposes the deep red elongated diamond (tengahan) on center with a Parang Rusak, a broken knife diagonal pattern representing courage and steadfastness, this motif also signifies that the wearer is an unconquerable spirit, as symbolized by the wavy pattern that is like both the undulations of a keris Javanese dagger and the curls of the ocean’s waves. Parang rusak wearers are noble characters who can control the continuous waves of temptation in human daily life. As such, this motif is reserved for royalty and nobility. The design of the central reserved section is one of the oldest types of ceremonial ritual batik. Kemben with their distinctive central color block lozenge are worn by dancers and women of the Sultan’s court as garments which cover the top half of the body. The Parang design is rendered in soga brown and indigo blue. The design is further augmented by a flora and fauna overlay. All of the design is outlined by a decorative fringe reserve border.
