About the Item

This rare 18th-century Wedgwood creamware tureen and matching plate were made at the Wedgwood factory in Burslem, Staffordshire, England, circa 1765. Both pieces have tulips hand-painted in rich purple enamel by James Bakewell, one of Wedgwood’s most gifted botanical artists. The creamware tureen is painted with flowing tulip blossoms across its domed lid and fluted body. The finial is formed as a closed tulip bud, echoing the painted decoration and adding sculptural charm. Scalloped shell-like edges and a purple border enhance the beauty of the botanical painting.. Crafted from Wedgwood’s early creamware, the tureen has a luminous surface that allows the botanical painting to shine. The matching plate features one central tulip, rendered with subtle tonal shading and expressive brushwork. The border is decorated with a delicate neoclassical garland of berries and stylized pendants, framed by a scalloped edge trimmed in purple. Marks: 1765 is before Josiah Wedgwood began marking his creamware with the impressed "WEDGWOOD" stamp. However, both the plate and the tureen have the unmistakable painting of James Bakewell**. Dimensions: Plate: 9.75" diameter; Tureen: 8" long x 5" wide x 5" tall Condition: Excellent Price: $800 **History of James Bakewell at Wedgwood: James Bakewell was an 18th‑century painter employed by Josiah Wedgwood to hand‑paint flower motifs—especially in purple tones—on creamware, most notably including pieces of the famous “Frog Service” made for Catherine the Great in the early 1770s. He is known primarily through Wedgwood’s decorating studios at Burslem and Chelsea. He specialized in monochrome floral decoration—naturalistic flowers in shades of purple on creamware (pale cream‑coloured earthenware).
