Georgian Spode Plate or Dish Chinoiserie Pattern No. 1867 porcelain, circa 1820

About the Item

This is a beautiful square plate or dish produced by the Spode factory and made of porcelain, in the early 19th Century, Circa 1815 to 1827. The dish is well potted on a low foot and is made of bone china (porcelain) which Spode called Felspar porcelain, this being whiter and harder than the earthenware pieces that they also produced in this period. The chinoiserie influenced pattern has a central image of Chinese auspicious objects: a small table with a planter or bough-pot with flowers in it. A square shaped vase again with flowers and a large bowl on stand filled with fruit. There are various fruits arranged around the bowl and by the table. The outer rim has a continuous gold gilded border pattern around the plate. This is Spode's pattern number 1867, hand painted in shades of green with much gold gilding. A similar plate in the same square shape is illustrated on page 46 in the book by Steven Smith called Spode & Copeland, published by Schiffer. The piece is fully marked to the base, with the printed Spode Felspar porcelain mark, which was used between 1815 to 1827. Overall, a beautiful plate or dish in great condition for a piece about 200 years old.

    By Josiah Spode

This is a very decorative large bowl, produced by the Spode factory, circa 1820. The bowl is circular with an everted rim and on a raised pedastal foot. This is pattern number 3875, the chinoiserie decoration being transfer printed in cobalt blue under-glaze, then carefully and beautifully hand-painted in bold colored enamels with additional gilding over-glaze. The pattern shows a large Jardiniere beside a vase, both holding colourful flowers beside a tree, all in a garden setting with a distinctive floral border. The pattern is on the inside and outside of the bowl with hand gilded gold highlights. The pattern is in the Chinese taste as produced by many of the English potteries of the time, to compete directly with the large import of Canton or Chinese export porcelain from China. The bowl is fully marked to the base, with "Spodes New Stone...
