About the Item

A FRENCH ORMOLU-MOUNTED CORSITE NAPOLÉONITE CENTERPIECE BY François Linke, PARIS, LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY The Dual-handled ovoid basin raised on a rectangular foot with a laurel-cast border. 9 in. (23 cm.) high, 17 ¼ in. (44.5 cm.) wide The present lot is closely related to a design originally registered with the prolific Parisian bronzier Denière and was produced by François Linke in two sizes and various types of marble. One of the two pieces made is in our gallery. This centerpiece by Francois Linke is made from a single piece of very rare Corset Napoleonite marble. Shades of grey, white and green are reminiscent of the sea foam of the Mediterranean Sea that washes the shores of Corsica. The works of the great cabinetmaker Francois Linke are presented throughout the world in museums, palaces and in the residences of private collectors. The great creation of the cabinetmaker FRANÇOIS LINKE can be found at auction houses such as Christie's and Sotheby's. Francois Linke 1855-1946, is an outstanding French cabinetmaker of the last quarter of the 19th century. A legendary master of the first half of the 20th century. Comes from Silesian Germans. He studied the craft in a German environment and in Vienna. In 1875 he finally settled in Paris. He opened a workshop in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, where he worked mainly for other manufacturers. The year of the master’s triumph was 1900 and the World Exhibition in Paris. Having risked everything by putting together a grandiose exhibition without insurance contracts, Linke gained worldwide fame and renown, with clients all over the world. Linke’s notebook records visitors to his stand from England, Europe, the Americas, Egypt and Japan, including: the King of Sweden, three visits from the King of Belgium, Prince Radziwill, the Prince d’Arenberg, the Comte Alberic du Chastel, Miss Anna May Gould, the American heiress, distinguished furniture makers and the President of France, Emile Loubet. His original sound of the styles of Louis XV and XVI, multiplied by the willfulness of Art Nouveau, gave an unusually bright chord of forms and decorations. In an era of crisis of traditional furniture, it remained the flagship of the industry. He embarked on many important commissions in the years up to the outbreak of the First World War, making and designing furniture for leading international industrialists and bankers. After the First World War, Linke undertook the extraordinary commission to furnish the Ras El Tin Palace in Alexandria for King Fuad of Egypt, possibly the largest single furniture commission ever conceived, eclipsing even Versailles. Linke flourished and remained active until the middle years of the 1930s and died in 1946. Napoleonite, called corsite or orbicular diorite: It is one of the rarest rocks in the world. It is of volcanic origin; it is a green-black lava that has trapped white amphiboles, hence the regular concentric circles visible on the stone. It is found in only one place in the world: the town of Santa Lucia di Tallano, above Sartène, in southern Corsica. Today, the deposit is practically exhausted and the only available stock is in Germany. The Emperor Napoleon, who gave his name to this diorite, loved it very much, it reminded him of his native island. He had many objects made of napoleonite: boxes, mirror frames... Because of its rarity, this stone was the preserve of the imperial family. At the fall of the Empire, Bonapartists began to buy objects made of Napoleonite to signify their loyalty to the Emperor.
