About the Item

Tapio Wirkkala is one of the pioneers of modern design in Finnish metals as well as glass design. Together with Bertel gardberg, he laid the foundations of modern design in an industry that was dominated by old-fashioned, classicist, decorative designs compared to glass and ceramics. From the late 1940s onwards, the company gained a reputation in silversmithing competitions, and in 1951, with Kultakeskus (Hopeakeskus, Westerback), with whom it collaborated for the next 30 years, it began to design silver and other precious metals in earnest. In jewellery, he began designing made-to-order gold jewellery in 1966 and silver jewellery in 1970, which was then distributed to the public. This copper tray was designed in 1974. It has a simple structure made from 1.5 mm copper plate that has been pressed into shape. It comes in two sizes, and this is the larger one. It is handmade and produced to order. The engraving reads ‘KULTAKESKUS OY MADE IN FINLAND DESIGN: TAPIO WIRKKALA’ and is made in Finland. Based on the name engraved on both sides, it is believed to have been manufactured in 1979. *There is some discolouration due to age, but there is no noticeable damage and it is in good condition.
