Wedgwood Creamware Set of Three Baskets, Graduated in Size, England Circa 1830

About the Item

This set of three creamware baskets was made by Wedgwood in England circa 1830. Each basket is beautifully crafted and slightly larger than the one before, creating a graceful, graduated set. The baskets are finely molded with a crisp basketwork design around the body, while the openwork rims are delicately pierced. Each matching stand echoes the pierced motif and features an oval medallion at the center with radiating fluting (see images). Wedgwood's creamware was celebrated for its pale ivory glaze and refined forms, which are evident in the elegance of these coordinated baskets and stands. Pierced creamware required exceptional skill in both molding and firing—this set reflects the remarkable craftsmanship for which Wedgwood became renowned. Marks: "Each piece is marked Wedgwood" on the underside. Dimensions: Smallest basket: 8.25" x 6.25" x 2.25"; stand: 9.5" x 7.75" Medium basket: 9" x 7" x 2.5"; stand: 10" x 8.5" Largest basket: 10" x 8" x 2.85"; stand: 11" x 9.25" Condition: Overall excellent condition, with one basket and stand showing slight original kiln burn at the edges (see images). Josiah Wedgwood pioneered creamware in the mid-18th century, developing a lightweight yet durable ceramic body that became highly fashionable across Europe. Favored by Queen Charlotte of England and continental nobility, Wedgwood's creamware set the standard for refined, neoclassical design.
