About the Item
This pair of antique Mason’s Ironstone plates was hand-painted in England around 1815 and features an early version of the “Jardinière” pattern, cataloged by the Mason’s Collectors’ Club as OF21a.
The plates feature a classic Imari palette, which includes cobalt blue, iron red, light blue, and gilt, with accents of soft peach.
At the center of each plate, a jardinière overflows with stylized flowers, framed by scrolling foliage and decorative panels.
The wide cobalt border is enhanced with intricate gilt detailing, showcasing geometric and foliate motifs.
The plates feature delicate outlines in red and blue.
These outlines are mechanically precise, indicating that the initial design was transferred by printing.
In contrast, the hand-painted colored areas—blue, red, and peach—show subtle brushstrokes, slight variations in saturation, and minor asymmetries.
The gilt was also applied by hand.
Both plates bear the impressed single line mark “MASON’S PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA,” which was in use from 1813 to 1820.
This early version of the Jardinière pattern is distinguished by its refined brushwork compared to later variants.
Dimensions: Each plate measures 8.5 inches in diameter
Condition: Very good. No chips, cracks, crazing, or repairs. Minor rubbing to the gilt on the borders.
