About the Item

This is a very decorative serving dish or tray by Mason's Ironstone, Lane Delph, England in the Oriental Pheasant pattern, dating to the very early period of Mason's ironstone, circa 1820. The dish is oval in shape with upturned sides, a notched rim and two formed side handles. It is decorated in one of Mason's most vividly coloured and sought after chinoiserie patterns, the Oriental Pheasant pattern, as documented on page 120 of:- A Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns, circa 1813-1848, published by The Masons Collectors' club. The pattern would have been transfer printed then hand-painted in bold enamels, with a particularly colourful and distinctive border design. The dish has the earliest ironstone blue printed mark "Patent Ironstone China " in a banner with the Mason's crown above, which dates it to circa 1820, with Mason's ironstone only starting in 1813.
