About the Item

This pair of antique porcelain saucers was hand-painted with Imari decoration at the Spode factory in Stoke-On-Trent, England. They were made during the Regency period circa 1820. The pattern is similar to the Admiral Nelson patterns made by Chamberlains Worcester and Coalport. The traditional Imari colors of iron red, blue, and gold are highlighted by gorgeous pink and green. If you look closely, you will see a pair of green birds and a pink lion. It is the combination of the vibrant gilt with the pink lion and green birds that makes these saucers so fabulous! Dimensions: 5.5" diameter Condition: Excellent Price: $430 Background of Early Spode: Josiah Spode I began the company in 1776. He died suddenly in 1797, and his son Josiah Spode II worked to perfect his father's accomplishments. In partnership with William Copeland, Josiah II continued the business for the next thirty years. Under their management, the company grew to be the largest pottery company in Stoke and a pre-eminent manufacturer of fine ceramics. Josiah Spode II was appointed "Potter to the Prince of Wales" when the Prince Regent visited the factory in 1806.
