About the Item

Exotic Amboyna From our Jewellery Box collection, we are delighted to introduce this large Anglo-Indian Campaign Amboyna Box. The Amboyna Box of large rectangular form veneered in beautiful Amboyna with golden burr grain framed in thick squared brass edging. The exterior of the box is finished with a brass outlined escutcheon and twin flush mounted brass carry handles. The interior of the box is faced in ebony and lined in a purple cushioned velvet with a lock catch to the rear right hand side which locks the lid position when fully opened and can be released by pinching the hinge together. The Amboyna Box dates to the 19th century early Victorian period circa 1850 and could be used for various applications such as a large Jewellery Box, laptop case or keepsake storage. The Anglo-Indian Campaign Amboyna Box comes complete with a working lock and tasselled key. The Burr from these trees varies in colour from a golden yellow to a deep red with sharp, close burr pips. It is very sought after and used for only the finest furniture. Anglo-Indian furniture made for Europeans in colonial India during the 18th & 19th centuries was generically called campaign furniture or colonial furniture (see campaign below) Victorian an era of British History corresponding approximately with the reign of Queen Victoria from the 20th of June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901 however, there are arguments stating that the Victorian era is actually from 1820 until 1914 proceeded by Georgian era and followed by the Edwardian era. Campaign is a term used for a type of furniture or object that was specifically designed for travel often for military use.

Large Anglo Indian Mosaic Inlaid Jewelry Hexagonal Box 1950s
Located in North Hollywood, CA
Large Anglo Indian Moorish Islamic style micro mosaic inlaid jewelry box with lid. Intricate inlaid Anglo Persian box with floral and geometric Moorish Sadeli design in an hexagonal shape form with micro mosaic marquetry, very fine artwork. Museum collector piece like the one in Doris Duke Islamic Art Museum. The repeating geometric patterns of Sadeli Mosaic are what give it beauty and richness. This decorative technique is a type of micro mosaic featuring repeating geometric patterns. Dimensions: H: 5 in : 12 in W x 12 in. D. Circa 1950s. Sadeli mosaic art is a highly skilled craft, it has had a long history in India and the Middle East with early examples dating back to the 16th century. In the 1800s, it became popular as a decoration on a variety of boxes, card cases, and chess boards imported from India. Since Bombay became a center of making them, they became known as Bombay boxes. The ancient art of Sadeli Mosaic is said to have been introduced from Shiraz in Persia via Sind to Bombay, a long time before Indian boxes appeared. The designs on early boxes look deceptively simple. The fact is they emerged from a culture which had mastered geometry and understood how to generate a pattern from a set number of points. The patterns are so harmoniously combined that their incredible complexity isn’t immediately apparent to the viewer. Will look great in a Moroccan decor...
