Griotte marble and gilt and patinated bronze clock garniture by Graux
French, c. 1870
Clock: Height 80cm, width 40cm, depth 33cm
Candelabra: Height 82cm, width 40cm, depth 40cmvarious
This fine three-piece set includes a mantel clock and a pair of candelabra. The pieces are crafted from bronze—both gilt and patinated—and rich griotte marble. The clock features a griotte marble truncated column shaped base, which is adorned with gilt bronze mounts, such as a low relief plaque and beading. The front of the case is inset with a dial within a gilt bronze bezel and beneath glass. Strikingly, the clock case is surmounted by a large and impressive patinated bronze sculptural group after an original by Clodion, which depicts two nymphs carousing with musical instruments and bunches of grapes.
The candelabra are similarly decorated, each with a conforming marble base. The stem of each candelabrum is modelled as two patinated bronze figures holding aloft the candelabrum head, which issues seven gilt bronze branches: six scrolling branches and one central one.
The clock dial is signed 'Jules Graux...

18th Century Russian Figural Bronze Candelabra
Located in New Orleans, LA
The epitome of Russian craftsmanship, this majestic and incredibly rare pair of candelabra would have been fit for the Czar. These superb Louis XVI style figural bronze candelabra were created in the Neoclassical taste that permeated Russia during the late 18th century. The chiselled gilt bronze work is in a class all its own – a trademark of only the most exceptional Russian ormolu craftsmen. Elegant patinated bronze nudes hold aloft delicate gilt bronze branches accentuated by gilt chains. Elevated atop classical columns crafted of polished gray marble, these lights perfectly express the outstanding grace and luxurious artistry of Russian decorative art.
In France during the late 18th century, Neoclassicism emerged as the most popular style after the exuberance of Rococo during the reign of Louis XV. The emphasis was on simplicity, straight lines and symmetry. Slenderness of proportion was stressed in furniture and decorating, and these patterns extended to other areas of the arts. French design taste has historically spread and influenced styles throughout Europe, and Russia in particular has a long history of adopting foreign stylistic trends considered to be the epitome of grand taste. Catherine the Great and her grandson Alexander I...

Louis XV Style Bronze Figural Clock Garniture by Maison Baguès French circa 1870
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A fine Louis XV style gilt and Patinated bronze figural clock garniture by Maison Baguès.
This rare example of a clock garniture by Maison Baguès has a twin train eight-day movement striking on a bell.
The garniture consists of a clock and a pair of candelabra en suite.
The clock has a Rococo cast case surmounted by a patinated bronze putto playing a lyre, above a circular white enamel dial with Roman numerals, Arabic seconds and pierced hands. The dial inscribed 'Eug Bagues, Paris'. The case terminates in four scrolling legs put down on an acanthus cast plinth base.
The candelabra en suite have gilt bronze pierced acanthus cast bases supporting patinated bronze putti each holding aloft three scrolling acanthus arms terminating in circular and foliate cast drip trays and nozzles.
Maison Baguès
The Baguès Company, located at 31, rue des Francs-Bourgeois, was founded in 1840 by Mr. Noel Baguès who started his business to cast liturgical bronzes.
By 1880 the company had expanded into the production of bronze light fixtures in response to the development of electrical lighting. Carried on by Noël’s son Eugène and grandsons Victor and Robert, Maison Baguès continued to progress, adding intricately detailed iron lighting collections in the 1920s as well as stair banisters...
