About
Jaeger-LeCoultre - Atmos Vendome cal. 526
Switzerland
brass gold plated
Year of manufacture 1979
Dimensions: H x W x D: 24 x 21 x 16 cm
Description:
Atmos Vendome caliber 526. model number 5834 with gold plated base and fluted columns.
White dial with Roman hours and Arabic minutes. Breguet hands.
Serial number: 518676
Year of construction: 1979.
Both the dial and the general architectural design of this watch are reminiscent of classicism. Therefore it became famous under the names "Style", "Empire" or "Directoire". The partial greenish varnish is supposed to remind of oxidizing bronze.
The Atmos Vendome was produced in different variations. With a gilded base or also with a marble base. The first Vendome appeared in 1962. The model offered here with the number 5834 was produced from 1973-1985.
Condition:
Perfect functionality. Absolute accuracy.
The photos are not "beautified", the case condition is as shown on the photos. On most of the photos the watch is shown without front window, because of the reflection of the flash while taking the photo.
There is a scratch on the top of the cover plate, on one of the photos you can see it clearly.
Worth knowing:
In 1927 the young engineer Jean-Léon Reutter invented the functional principle of the Atmos watch. He used the "breathing movements" of a gas-filled bellows, which occur when the temperature changes, to wind the movement. The Jaeger LeCoultre company used this principle to build the Atmos watch in series production from 1928 onwards.
The movement of the watch stands out due to its cylindrical box on the back. Inside it, a bellows-like expansion chamber contains chloroethyl, a gas that expands particularly strongly between 10 °C and 27 °C.
A temperature difference of only one degree Celsius winds the watch for 48 hours. This interesting winding mechanism is complemented by an excellent movement of extreme precision with a heavy torsion pendulum (rotating pendulum).
The condition for the accuracy of the clock is a stable and vibration-free installation.
The watch is also extremely environmentally friendly, and despite its unlimited running time, does not require a battery or any other electrical drive.
The Atmos has been Switzerland's official state gift to prominent visitors, e.g. politicians from abroad, for decades.
