  • Large Louis XVI Style Malachite and Ormolu Mantel Clock
    By Japy Frères
    Located in London, GB
Large Louis XVI style malachite and ormolu mantel clock French, late 19th century Measures: Height 55cm, width 49cm, depth 31cm In the Louis XVI style, with a rectangular canted case in a later malachite veneer and adorned with ormolu mounts, this magnificent mantel clock was made in France in the late nineteenth century. The elaborate rectangular case features a swept top surmounted by a floral wreath and quiver of arrows trophy, flanked by floriate urn finials. It is decorated with twin draped putti, and an oval shaped cartouche cresting, which is united by floriate and fruiting ribbon tied pendant swags. The front of the piece is inset with foliate scroll mounts, and the canted corners bear floriate pendant garlands, above female mask heads. The whole piece is set on foliate toupie feet. The floral enamelled dial is painted with Arabic numerals and an outer five minute track. The brass twin movement strikes on two bells with a pendulum; there is a winder and adjusting key. The movement bears an indistinct pastille mark, probably for Japy Frères. A superb antique timepiece...

  • Chinese Export Famille Verte Porcelain & French Ormolu Chinoiserie Centerpiece
    By Edward Holmes Baldock
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
A very fine and large 19th century Chinese export famille verte porcelain and French figural ormolu-mounted Chinoiserie style centerpiece jardinière, in the manner of Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845). The circular-ovoid porcelain bowl or cachepot, maybe 18th century Jiaqing period (unverified), decorated with a blue and purple ground background with parcel gilt depicting pagodas, trees, mountains and landscape scenes, flanking scrolled handles issuing from the base and ending with a finely chased ormolu pierced acanthus rim. The two ends with a projected mask of Chinese Imperial lions or foo dogs, surmounted and raised on six finely chased ormolu masks of Bacchus satyrs flanked by seashell-like mounts. The Ormolu, circa Paris, 1880. The Porcelain circa 1800 (Maybe 18th century.) Measures: Height: 15 3/4 inches (40 cm.) Overall width: 21 inches (53.4 cm.) Depth: 17 inches (43.2 cm.) Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845) was a prominent London furniture dealer to the Royal Family, father of Edward Holmes Baldock. He was first listed in the London trade directories in 1805. That listing had him operating out of No.7 Hanway Street in London, where he was described as selling "china and glass". An updated listing in 1821 described his business as "an antique furniture and ornamental furniture dealer", and in 1826 as a buyer and seller of "china, cabinets, screens, bronzes etc". Between 1832 and 1837 he sold earthenware and glass products to William IV, and upon the ascendancy of Queen Victoria in 1837, sold china until his death in 1845. Baldock was one of the first antique dealers and is similar to the 18th century marchands-merciers Dominique Daguerre and Simon-Philippe. He was the father of Edward Holmes Baldock (1812-1875), a British Conservative Party politician, and of Mary Frances Baldock, wife of the philatelist W. A. S. Westoby. • French Musical Automaton Picture Clock
    Located in New Orleans, LA
One of the most amazing timepieces we have ever acquired that offers far more than meets the eye, this incredible work of art blends the beauty of a painting with the mechanical complexities of both a cylinder music box and an automaton. While it is clear to see the integrated clock residing within the arched giltwood and gesso frame, when activated, this painting quite literally comes alive. As the cylinder mechanism within plays its lovely tune, every character in the farrier's shop becomes animated – from the group of farrier's toiling away at the forge and anvil forming the horseshoes, to the wagging of the charming terrier's tale. This musical automaton picture clock is attributed to Xavier Tharin of Paris who was the preeminent creator of this fantastical "moving pictures", especially this particular farrier scene. His process mixed oil painting and hand-colored lithograph images that were layered starting from the back, middle and foreground to craft the complex series of movements throughout the painting. A look inside this particular work reveals the complex mechanism (with the three gongs, pendulum and cylinder components immediately visible) which must run the timepiece, the cylinder musical component plus the multitude of moving elements in the painting...a truly incredible feat considering the technical prowess to create just one of these devices. Musical picture clocks...
