About the Item
Louis XVI period neoclassical ormolu and malachite mantel clock
French, Late 18th Century
Measures: Height 53cm, width 36cm, depth 14cm
Encapsulating the stylistic refinement and grace of the Louis XVI period and the emergence of the Neoclassical over the Baroque, this beautiful mantel clock dates to late eighteenth century France, and is a superb example of the artistic quality and skill of the decorative arts at this time.
It features a dial face, signed 'Degre a Paris,' set against a central column adorned with a malachite veneer, and flanked by a pair of smaller similar pedestals, which are interlinked with chains and slender bodies and heads of griffins. These are similarly chained to a small urn surmount above, all in ormolu, and decorated throughout by elegant foliate mounts.

The elaborate rectangular case features a swept top surmounted by a floral wreath and quiver of arrows trophy, flanked by floriate urn finials. It is decorated with twin draped putti, and an oval shaped cartouche cresting, which is united by floriate and fruiting ribbon tied pendant swags. The floral enamelled dial is painted with Arabic numerals and an outer five minute track. The brass twin movement strikes on two bells with a pendulum; there is a winder and adjusting key. The movement bears an indistinct pastille mark, probably for Japy Frères. A superb antique timepiece...Category
