Antique Art Nouveau Ceramic Table or Mantel Clock with Bronze Flower Sculptures
Located in Lisse, NL
Rare and stunning majolica glazed antique clock from the European Art Nouveau era. If you like rare Arts & Crafts antiques in general and marvelous clocks in particular then this handcrafted table clock from circa 1900-1910 could be the perfect addition to your collection / interior. When you understand how many difficult and time consuming techniques it took to create this antique work of time telling art, will you really be able to appreciate its beauty, rarity and quality. First of all, it would have taken a designer several days, if not weeks, to hand draw this design and this would take multiple sketches. Secondly, a ceramics specialist created the perfectly shaped and glazed majolica 'clock house'. This requires glazing and heating/'baking' in the keln and there too many things can go wrong. Thirdly, the aesthetically beautiful flower sculptures that you now see in gilt bronze, would first have to be sculpted out of clay or another material. From that initial sculpture a mold would have to be made and that mold would then be filled with extremely hot liquid bronze. The bronze sculpture would then have to be sanded, polished and gilt. Fourthly, in both the glazed ceramic clock house and the bronze flowers...

French Japonaise Ormolu & Champleve Enamel Five-Piece Clock Garniture
Located in Pasadena, CA
A French Japonaise Ormolu & Champleve Enamel Five-Piece Clock Garniture France, Circa 1860 Comprising a mantel clock, a pair of vases and a pair of three-light candelabra, each with blue and turquoise ground and decorated with tropical flowers, the dial dated ' 3. AUGUST. / 1824 / 1874 ' The clock: 14.3/4 in. (37.5 cm.) high, 8 in. (20.3 cm.) wide, 7 in. (17.8 cm.) deep The candelabra: 12 in. (30.5 cm.) high The vases: 111/4 in. (29.8 cm.) high Champlevé is an enamelling technique in the decorative arts, or an object made by that process, in which troughs or cells are carved, etched, die struck, or cast into the surface of a metal object, and filled with vitreous enamel. The piece is then fired until the enamel fuses, and when cooled the surface of the object is polished. The uncarved portions of the original surface remain visible as a frame for the enamel designs; typically they are gilded in medieval work. The name comes from the French for "raised field", "field" meaning background, though the technique in practice lowers the area to be enamelled rather than raising the rest of the surface. The technique has been used since ancient times, though it is no longer among the most commonly used enamelling techniques. Champlevé is suited to the covering of relatively large areas, and to figurative images, although it was first prominently used in Celtic art for geometric designs. In Romanesque art its potential was fully used, decorating caskets, plaques and vessels, in Limoges enamel and that from other centres. Champlevé is distinguished from the technique of cloisonné enamel in which the troughs are created by soldering flat metal strips to the surface of the object. The difference between the techniques is analogous to the woodworking techniques of intarsia and marquetry. It differs from the basse-taille technique, which succeeded it in the highest quality Gothic work, in that the bottoms of the recesses for the enamel are rough, and so only opaque enamel colours are used. In basse-taille the recesses are modelled, and translucent enamels are used, for more subtle effects, as in the 14th century Parisian Royal Gold Cup. Enamel was first used on small pieces of jewellery, and has often disintegrated in ancient pieces that have been buried. Consistent and frequent use of champlevé technique is first seen in the La Tène style of early Celtic art in Europe, from the 3rd or 2nd century BC, where the predominant colour was a red, possibly intended as an imitation of red coral (as used on the Witham Shield), and the base was usually bronze. The "Insular Celts" of the British Isles made especially common use of the technique, seen as highlights on the relief decoration of the Battersea Shield and other pieces. However this was technically not true enamel in the usual sense of the word, as the glass was only heated until it became a soft paste before being pushed into place. This is sometimes informally known as "sealing-wax" enamelling, and may be described as "glass inlay" or similar terms. True enamelling technique, where glass paste is put into place and fired until it liquifies, was learnt from the Romans. The earliest literary description of enamel is from the Greek sophist Philostratus III, who wrote in his Icones (Bk I, 28), describing polychrome horse-harness: "It is said that the barbarians in the Ocean pour these colours on heated bronze and that they adhere, become as hard as stone and preserve the designs that are made on them". Celtic curvilinear styles were highly effective in enamel, and were used throughout the Roman period when they largely disappear in other media. The Staffordshire Moorlands Pan is a 2nd-century trulla with large enamel roundels in four colours of enamel, commissioned by or for Draco, a soldier, possibly a Greek, as a souvenir of his service on Hadrian's Wall. It is one of a group of similar enamelled vessels found in Britain and northern Gaul. Smaller items from similar contexts include brooches and other jewellery, and mounts for horse harness as described by Philostratus. Around the end of the Roman Empire new forms arose: the terminals of the increasingly fancy penannular brooches...

Persian Mantel Clock Attr. to F.Barbedienne & A.V. Geoffroy-Dechaume, Circa 1867
By Adolphe-Victor Geoffroy-Dechaume, Ferdinand Barbedienne
Located in PARIS, FR
Persian style gilt-bronze mantel clock attributed to A.V. Geoffroy-Dechaume and F. Barbedienne, with arabesques, leaves and palmets decor, surmonted by a pierced gilt-bronze work. The dial with Roman numerals on white enamel cartouches, is supported by two traditional decorative Khmer beasts. Resting on an onyx base with scrolled feet. Our model is very close to a mantel clock designed by the sculptor Geoffroy-Dechaume for the « Maison Delafontaine ». Adolphe-Victor Geoffroy-Dechaume began to work in 1847 for Auguste Maximilien Delafontaine (1813-1892). According to the sculptor’s account books (sketches and pictures reproduced in the exhibit catalog “De plâtre et d’or, Geoffroy-Dechaume, sculpteur romantique de Viollet-le-Duc”, Musée d’art et d’histoire Louis Senlecq, L’Isle-Adam, 1998, p. 88), he provided in 1852 a Persian style clock sketch to the Delafontaine who ask Elmrich to execute it. This clock had been exhibited at the 1855 Paris Universal Exhibition, where Ferdinand Barbedienne could have admired it. This model belongs to the Persian style production of Barbedienne, executed by Geoffroy-Dechaume. This style began with the 1867 Paris Universal Exhibition, where Barbedienne exhibited works inspired by far and middle eastern styles. Among Chinese and Japanese style pieces, Persian style pieces were showed: « exceptional jardinieres of several styles, Persian styles models are a real success that will quickly supersede the Chinese and Japanese styles items ». Ferdinand Barbedienne had focused on Indian and Persian style pieces« that you can find among boxes, cups and other charming items covered with palmettes, like Kashmir fabrics. In the same inspiration, two lapis and turquoise blue background lamps decorated with gilt arabesques, a decoration motif as luxurious as it is simple » Barbedienne kept Chinese and Japanese styles for vases and enameled metal boxes, which had a real success. Adolphe-Victor Geoffroy-Dechaume (1816-1892), French sculptor and silversmith, studies at the drawing free-program school before joining, in 1831, the Paris «Ecole des Beaux-Arts». He will be David d’Angers’ and James Pradier’ pupil. Born in 1810, Ferdinand Barbedienne, the most important caster of bronze pieces of art during the second half of the 19th Century, created and directed in Paris one of the principle artistic foundries of his time. Barbedienne specialized in classical reproductions, whose models were exposed in famous European museums. His company’s illustrated catalogues included diverse objects such as busts and ornamental sculpture (clocks, candelabras, cups), sometimes life-sized, and also bronzes for furniture. Apart from his own production, Barbedienne worked for the most renowned sculptors such as Barrias, Clésinger and Carrier-Belleuse. All his works were highly esteemed and he was very appreciated by contemporary critics. At the 1851 London exhibition...

French Empire Ormulu Bronze Mantel Clock, Lepaute, Thomire, Paris, circa 1815

Ormulu pendule with depiction of friendship and love Paris (Lepaute, Thomire) fire-gilt bronze Empire around 1815 Dimensions: H x W x D: 44 x 36 x 13 cm French pendulum movement with eight days duration. Thread suspension and lock disc striking movement with strike on bell on the half and full hour. White enamel dial with Roman hour numerals and Breguet hands. Signature: LePaute & Fils / Hrl. du Roi (Pierre-Basile Lepaute (1750 - 1843) with his son Pierre-Michel Lepaute (1785-1849); from 1811 in joint workshop). Description: The extremely high quality pendulum shown here takes up a profound theme: Friendship, which combines with love and can thereby outlast time and death. As it is typical for the epoch of classicism, personifications and symbols are taken from the fund of ancient mythology and art and then developed further. The main figure is a young woman in an antique, girded garment, standing barefoot and with crossed legs next to an altar, on which she is leaning with her left elbow. She gracefully bows her head towards a tempestuously approaching Cupid, grasps his right hand with her left and draws him to her bosom, the seat of the heart. The delicate ambivalence of flying towards and being held culminates in the trustingly intimate look that the two cast at each other. The young woman personifies friendship, the winged Cupid love. As a sign of their intimate connection, two burning hearts appear on the altar next to the two, framed by the puffed scarf, which are closely bound together by a chain of flowers. Next to them, on the altar slab, one can see an erected book with the title "Amitie" (French: amitie, friendship). Supporting the book is a pomegranate held by a ring of pomegranate flowers. The bursting seeds spill out of the cracked skin. Since ancient times, the pomegranate and its blossoms have been dedicated to the goddess Persephone, symbolizing the underworld and death, but also life and fertility. The myrtle interwoven in the pomegranate flower wreath of "friendship" also has a far-reaching symbolic power: the plant was dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite, stands for virginity, and was and is therefore obligatory in the bridal wreath...
