About the Item

Beautiful and engaging representation of two herons taking flight from a pond; the animals have been realized with a meticulous microfusion in bronze, then gilded, that has succeeded in highlighting all the details; to make their flight more real, they have been fixed to a branch of the aquatic plant that sprouts from a pond (the plant is the Typha augustifolia a unique shrub that embellishes ponds and natural lake spaces); the base, very well-proportioned to keep the whole structure in balance, is made of wood painted black; the shapes of the herons have been made in a harmonious and fluid way, graceful and pleasant, two small works of art! Beautiful intuition to depict the two birds as they take flight, which is the moment in which you can enjoy all the magnificence and charm of the heron as it stretches out on the wings of the wind; in fact, while in the pond, the animal has the characteristic elegant static nature of a wader and when they fly, herons keep their heads pulled back towards their bodies, keeping their legs stretched out behind them. This positioning of the body during flight distinguishes herons from cranes that fly with their necks stretched out. Very interesting is the symbolism of the heron: in the ancient Egyptians, the heron was worshipped as the creator of light. A heron represented with two heads was instead a symbol of prosperity. In China instead, the heron is a symbol of strength, patience, purity, and longevity. In many Chinese legends, the heron was represented as the guide who leads or ferries souls to heaven. The Native Americans, however, who as we know used to observe carefully the nature in which they lived, noticed the curiosity and the stubborn determination of the heron. In fact, many tribes considered this bird a symbol of foresight and wisdom. To make the heron an important artistic object, were the Japanese; in the Japanese culture, in fact, the heron was the animal symbol of beauty, elegance, nobility and was often painted in winter contexts. Our composition has a rather peculiar history: we found it in Place du Tertre in the Montemarte district in Paris, a district that since the end of the 19th century has been the center of Parisian cultural and creative life with its characteristic bohemian presence of painters, sculptors, poets, and musicians. The old craftsman-sculptor with long white hair and unkempt beard from whom we bought it told us that between 1968 and 1970 he had made a series of compositions depicting herons to symbolize "the flight of man on the wings of freedom" in those difficult years; he then confessed to us that, full of disappointment, sometime later he destroyed all the pieces, he kept only the one we were dealing with because it was the most beautiful! Although with a bit of nostalgia in his heart, he sold it to us! Measures width cm.47, depth cm.13, height cm.57.
